Home and Tenant Insurance

If you own a house, condominium, cottage or are a tenant, it is wise to purchase the appropriate form of property insurance. The financial consequences of a serious loss to such an asset can be devastating and an insurance policy provides the individual with financial protection and peace of mind. In addition to protection of the asset, individuals should also be concerned with their exposure to liability. In today's litigious society, the threat of legal action is everywhere and liability protection is a standard coverage within these types of insurance policies. A property policy combines coverage for the main dwelling, its contents and the liability of the insured in one consolidated policy.

All home insurance policies are not alike – they can vary considerably from one insurance company to another. However, they generally fall into two main categories:

Broad Form policies provide protection on all “All Risks” basis on the building, but on a limited basis on the contents. “All Risks” coverage provides protection from anything that can cause you loss or damage, unless the policy specifically excludes that cause of damage.

Comprehensive Form policies provide all risks coverage on both the building and the contents.

While more expensive, Comprehensive policies provide better protection than Broad Form policies.

These 2 types of policies also apply to Tenants and Condominium unit owners’ policies.
